Wow, looks like an awesome trip. I'm jealous. I live in Idaho about 9 hours from there. Those dories are sweet. I'm frantically trying to finish mine. My setup will be similar except I think I might be a bit smaller. (16'-6" length and 54" wide bottom) But I want to do a self bailing system like yours. Do you think you could maybe help me out? Also, why do have those towers for the oar locks instead of just putting the locks in blocks between the gunnels? By the way, what size is your boat and long of oar do you use? Walt

Westwater was a blast.

I am always happy to share what I've learned through building this boat, and getting ready to start another one soon. Hopefully.

Feel free to email me - o.c.utah@hotmail.com with any specific questions. It may take a few days for me to get back to you.

My boat is 14.5" down the center, with a 70" beam and 54" wide floor. My oars are 9', and they are too short. I will be switching to 10'.

The oarstands are nice for various reasons. The way I did my decking and hatches, I am sitting almost at the level of the gunnels, so putting the oarlock in the gunnel would have made it much too short. The oar towers (from NRS) raise them up to a comfortable height, and allow for someone else to change the configuration in the future if they choose.
